Bio
Principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Jörgen van Rijen is a specialist on both the modern and baroque trombone.
He performs as a soloist with distinguished conductors and orchestras all over the world, such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, BBC Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Antwerp Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, Rotterdam Philharmonic,Tokyo Philharmonic and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony a.o.
Jörgen actively promotes new repertoire for his instrument. Various composers wrote or will write new pieces for him, among which Tan Dun, Bryce Dessner, James MacMillan, Samy Moussa, Kalevi Aho and Nico Muhly.
He released several solo recordings with BIS Records including music by Arvo Pärt, J.S. Bach, James MacMillan, Luciano Berio and Kalevi Aho.
Besides winning several International competitions, he received the prestigious Netherlands Music Prize and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.
As guest principal he performed with the New York Philharmonic and LA Philharmonic a.o.
He is professor at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and visiting professor at the Royal Academy in London.
